We sailed south with the Baha Haha rally. This is a group of like minded mariners looking to get to warmer waters as soon as the hurricane season is over in Mexico. 130 some odd boats left San Diego the morning of November 3rd bound for Cabo San Lucas with two stops along the way. The Haha is more of a Turkey Trot than a race. Competitiveness being superseded by having fun in a supportive environment ment to get everyone to the destination in one piece. This was the 31st and final Haha that the Grand Poobah, Richard Spindler, would be running. He was our host on the last Haha I did in 2004. Although you can sail anytime to Mexico. This is a way to get your feet wet with a group of experienced sailors as you shake down your boat on its first long passage. And it requires you to put a date on the calender to keep you focused. It took us 2 1/2 days to get to Turtle Bay, about halfway down the Baja peninsula. We had to motor half the way, as the first day was dead calm. We had 3 days in Turtle Bay, two beach parties and a “Bazeball” game with the community to benefit the kids in this little pueblo. Bahía de Tortugas is a little fishing village a three hour remote drive from the nearest other village. Think the middle of the Nevada desert with miles of beaches. The Haha is looked forward to by the locals too. The revenue is a great help to a under privileged community. We also explored the area on foot and also had the opportunity to take a class in the forgotten science of celestial navigation, from one of the other sailors, Paul Kamen.
