Catalina to Newport

Newport Beach Harbor. Back to civilization.

Gentle motor sail to Newport. Go into our slip at Marina Park after the full tour of Newport harbor. Marina Park is a small marina run by the City of Newport Beach. This is definitely the best accommodations we’ve had so far. New facility a block from the beach. A community center(that as I write this is having a retro rock and roll concert in the park), 4 star cafe overlooking the harbor, free laundry, new free showers with, get this, hot water! The Newport Beach pier is a few blocks away which is a happenin’ spot. At the moment there is the Newport Beach volleyball invitational going on.

A couple days later a squall came through prompting evacuations in the areas scarred by the fires this year. Seemed like a good opportunity for an adventure. Syd was game, mom was gonna skip this one to stay dry and warm on the boat.

Balboa Ferry
The actual goal of the adventure…Cielito Lindos on Olvera St. in Downtown LA.
Grand Central Market

This was a produce market when I was a kid. Now the stalls are all like food trucks without wheels. All the stalls looked pretty popular. Lively spot right downtown. Right across the street was “Angels Flight”, a funicular railway to the top of Bunker Hill.

The weather cleared up for Dad and Syd to spend the day at Knotts Berry Farm. Disneyland is on tap for Saturday with the fam so had a father daughter day without the lines and better roller coasters.

Once was enough for Dad. Syd would always ride the coasters 2 or three more times.

This will be another in a long line of my stating this was my last trip to Disneyland. My grandchildren will no doubt make a liar out of me. The only difference between a mosh pit and Disneyland is you like the music at a concert and they serve alcohol. The only thing worse was being trapped in a dentist chair with a loop of the Carpenters “Top of the World” playing. Kill the “it’s a small world” theme song and serve beer and I might be able to tolerate one more trip. That said I did have a good time hanging out with Amy, Annie and my granddaughter Alex.

The rest of our time was spent getting to know Newport, Balboa, and the beach a block from the boat.

Great spot for learning to surf at the Newport Pier
